Source: Chiefs, Jones sign 2-year deal

Kansas City signed running back Thomas Jones to a two-year deal worth $5 million, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The Chiefs announced the deal Tuesday but declined to disclose the terms.

Jones was released by the Jets last week after being due a $3 million roster bonus on top of a $2.8 million base salary this season. He and the Jets failed to reach a compromise on restructuring his contract; the team wanted him to take a pay cut.

Jones wasn’t the only running back on Kansas City’s radar. After spending Tuesday with the Washington Redskins, Pittsburgh Steelers free-agent running back Willie Parker was scheduled to visit the Chiefs on Thursday, a league source told Schefter, but the trip was canceled when Jones entered the fold.

The Chiefs also met with Justin Fargas on Tuesday, according to a league source.

Chiefs Secondary Has Been Exposed With Big Plays

Win or lose, the Chiefs have a problem that doesn’t seem to be going away. They know their defense has a hard time stopping big plays, and the bigger problem is that other teams have begun to notice, too.

And unless the Chiefs get it under control, opponents might spend the next five weeks picking on their increasingly worrisome secondary.

“We will get beat,” coach Todd Haley said this week, a day after San Diego ripped through the Chiefs defense in a 43-14 win.

The Chargers appeared to shape their offensive game plan with the notion of attacking the secondary in mind, and it worked — and kept working against a defense that has tried many options but can’t seem to get past its overmatched personnel and persistent injuries.

Before the Chiefs get to those final five contests in a season that seems as much about education as anything, they have at least learned that perhaps their top offseason need lies at safety.

Johnson released by Chiefs

Larry Johnson’s record-breaking career as a Kansas City running back is over.

The Chiefs confirmed Monday that they had run out of patience with his off-the-field problems and released Johnson the day he was due to come back from his second suspension in a year.

Johnson, who turns 30 on Nov. 19, was just 75 yards away from breaking Priest Holmes’ team rushing record.

The decision by the Chiefs (1-7) was not a surprise.

“A part of him is excited and a part of him is very regretful,” Johnson’s agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Associated Press. “There’s a lot of feelings going on right now. It’s analogous to breaking up with a girlfriend. Maybe you saw it coming, but it still hurts when it happens.”

Longtime Chiefs assistant coach Wallis dies

Darvin Wallis, the second-longest tenured assistant coach in Chiefs history, has died at age 60.

He was in Colorado when he died in his sleep. The cause of his death is unknown.

Wallis accompanied Marty Schottenheimer from Cleveland to Kansas City in 1989 and worked behind the scenes for Schottenheimer, Gunther Cunningham, Dick Vermeil and Herm Edwards as a defensive assistant/quality control coach for 19 years before retiring in January 2008.

Wallis’ tenure with the Chiefs as an assistant ranked second only to Tom Pratt’s 21 years.

Chiefs suspend RB Larry Johnson

Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, who made two gay slurs within a 24-hour period, was given what amounts to a one-game suspension Wednesday night, but Johnson’s agent said he would appeal.

Agent Peter Schaffer said the game check and other lost revenue would amount to about a penalty of about $600,000 for the former two-time Pro Bowl player.

In a three-sentence release, the Chiefs said Johnson would be suspended until Monday, Nov. 9 for conduct detrimental to the team. The Chiefs are on their bye week and will not play again until traveling to Jacksonville on Nov. 8.

The Chiefs had been saying for three days that they were “investigating” the situation. Johnson was told to stay away from the team on Tuesday.

Schaffer said he had consulted with the Players Association about the appeal.

Dwayne Bowe and making the most of your chances

Dwayne Bowe is one of the good parts. We can all probably agree on that. He is among a handful of players on the Chiefs’ current roster you can see and say, yeah, you can win with that guy.

Maybe not as a No. 1 receiver. Or maybe so. He just turned 25 last month, there’s still room for him to get better*, learn to run better routes and the tricks of using a big body and, most of all, cut down on his drops.

And there’s the point for today. The drops.

* Cross-sport analogies are never perfect, but there’s a bit of Mark Teahen circa 2006-07 in Bowe right now. The potential is there for him to be a very, very good player — the kind a team can build WITH, if not around. Teahen hasn’t made that leap, and time is running out.

Bowe caught six passes for 109 yards on Sunday, which is very good. He’s had only one game in his career with more yards.

It’s about time: Haley gets first win as Chiefs’ head coach

Todd Haley stepped into a hallway, the tears still in his eyes and the praise still coming. Somebody handed him a cell phone. It was his wife. That didn’t help the overflow of emotion that he was experiencing.

“I’ve been waiting to enjoy one of these,” said Haley, the Chiefs’ coach.

The postgame meeting and a different kind of news conference behind him, Haley took a breath and absorbed what it meant to get his first victory as Kansas City’s head coach, a 14-6 win at Washington. His shirt was still soaked after an ice bath, and his eyes remained red from four hours of cold and ending five weeks of losses. Haley, 42, leaned against a wall and was honest about the day’s importance.
